Ingredients
- 60 g golden linseed (flaxseed)
- 40 g chia seeds
- 40 g shelled hemp seeds
- 50 g walnuts
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for a breakfast version)
Method
- Grind: grind the linseed in a spice grinder or small blender until fine. Whole linseed tends to pass through the body undigested, so grinding unlocks its goodness.
- Chop: roughly chop the walnuts.
- Mix: stir everything together and store in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
- Use: sprinkle a heaped tablespoon over breakfast, salads, soups, stews or yoghurt every day.
Why it's good for you: Linseed, chia, hemp and walnuts are the richest plant sources of ALA, the plant form of omega-3 fat, which is linked to healthy blood fats and a calmer inflammatory balance. They also bring magnesium, zinc and plenty of fibre to feed the gut. The body converts only a small amount of ALA into the long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) found in oily fish, so if you don't eat fish, an algae-based omega-3 is worth discussing with a practitioner.
Good to know: Keep it in the fridge: omega-3 fats are delicate and can turn rancid in warmth and light.
